Thai prostitutes desperate to find Western husbands spend half their income on interpreters, it has been revealed. Film crews followed Fon, a bar worker, and Yek, a karaoke singer, on their plight to find foreign men to whisk them away from a life of poverty and provide for their children. For foreign men searching for petite Thai wives the Nana Plaza red light district of Bangkok is full of Eastern promise, but for the women who work there life couldnt be less glamorous. By night Fon, a 21-year-old single mum, sells her body to tourists but by day she hands her wages over to a cunning businesswoman. Pompeli, one of the only women in the area with a computer and good grasp of English, charges the girls to send and reply to e-mails from potential husbands. Like Fon, karaoke singer Lek, 32, is desperate to find a foreign husband to provide for her and her two young children. She has been posting photographs of herself on the Internet in the hope of finding a foreign love, but is having little success. The girls were filmed for Channel 4 show Girlfriend for Sale. On air december 2007.

These marriages are doomed to fail 75-85% of time. The cultures are completely different and the people doing this are too lazy to try and really understand the cutlture of the other. The men think they get an obedient, hard working wife that? will give them unlimited sex. The women think they get a rich, romantic, caring husband. Thai women ends up incredibly lonely if moving to the West, and sees the man is far from rich and is not ready to work (she thought she was marying a rich guy)

its favoured for the women and against the men here. (I speak Thai & work in BKK) eg: when the women is discussing the age differences between the men and women she says she has seen it when the man has been 70 and the woman 30 – 40. But the? subtitles left out the ’40′ bit.

you get these bullsh@t parachute journalists dropping into Thailand for a week and warping it for their own gain, They don’t care about the small % of prostitutes (I think its as low as 3%? total population) & they damage the? countrys reputation worse than anything. I have more respect for the working girls & the punters than these journalists creating a warp storey harming Thailand.
